The People’s Marathon, organized by the People’s Bank Sports Club, took place recently with the participation of a number of sports enthusiasts. The event, held to coincide with the 46th anniversary of People’s Bank, consisted of an Open Marathon Race for Men and a Mini Marathon Race for Boys under-20 years. The Marathon Race began opposite the People’s Bank Head Office and ended at the same venue.

The winners of the Open Marathon Race for Men are as follows. In first place was K. G. I. K. Wijethilaka of the Sri Lanka Army with a timing of 2:37:23, who received a cash prize of Rs.100,000. In second place was D. M. P. Bandara of the Sri Lanka Army with a timing of 2:42:43, who received Rs.75,000. The third place winner was H. A. Nimal Dissanayake of the Sri Lanka Army with a timing of 2:44:27, who won Rs.50,000.

The winners of the Mini Marathon Race for Boys under-20 years are as follows. H. M. Sudesh Prasanna Herath of Yapahuwa MMV, Maho was adjudged the winner with a timing of 1:22:10, and received a cash prize of Rs. 25,000. The second place winner was M. Prabath Madushanka of Gunananda MMV, Bibiladeniya with a timing of 1:23:49, who received a prize of Rs.20,000. P. M. Shean Dulip Thisera of Mahanama M. V., Panadura became the third place winner with a timing of 1:24:22, and won a cash prize of Rs.15,000.

Members of the Bank’s management including Mr. W. Karunajeewa, Chairman and Mr. Asoka de Silva, Chief Executive Officer/General Manager of People’s Bank; members of the People’s Bank Sports Club; bank officials and other participants were present at the occasion, lending their support and voice to make it a success. The event was conducted in accordance with the Governing Rules and Regulations of the Amateur Athletic Association of Sri Lanka and Nationalized Services Amateur Athletic Association of Sri Lanka.
